Throughout October every year, Monroe STOPe participates in the National Domestic Violence Awareness campaign for community awareness and education. There are many activities this October.
In Her Shoes: An Experiential Learning Activity
What: An interactive experience to explore the challenges faced by survivors of domestic violence (DV).
Why: Gain insights into why survivors make the choices they do, what resources are available, and how you can help.
Quote: “In Her Shoes/In Their Shoes leads communities to shift their thinking about domestic violence and evolve their practices to support survivors and hold those who cause harm accountable.” – Washington State Coalition Against Domestic Violence
Cost: Free and open to the public.
Wear Purple Day: October 24, 2024 (Purple Thursday)
What: A national day of action to raise awareness about domestic violence.
How to Participate:
Wear purple to your office or workplace.
Take a photo of yourself or your group in purple.
Post the photo with hashtags #PurpleThursday and #MonroeSTOPe, or send your photo to Monroe STOPe via text or email (423-519-1232, advocatemonroe@gmail.com).
Prize: Groups participating in Monroe County's Purple Thursday have a chance to win a Ya Rona gift card!
Shining a Light on Domestic Violence Displays
What: Purple lights will be displayed at the Monroe County Justice Center and Courthouse to honor the “silent victims” of domestic violence.
Why: Over half of all domestic violence cases go unreported to the police. We hope to give victims the courage to speak out.
Purple Ribbons
What: Purple ribbons displayed around the Madisonville Courthouse serve as a reminder that domestic violence has no place in our community.
Why: Monroe County has a free, federally funded Victim Serving Agency to support those in need. Help spread awareness by requesting a free purple bow to display at your home or business.
Request a Bow: Text or call 423-519-1232, or email advocatemonroe@gmail.com.
Paint the Town Purple: #PutTheNailInIt
What: Paint a fingernail purple in October to show support for ending domestic violence.
How: Post photos of your purple nails on our Facebook page (@MonroeSTOPe) with the hashtag #PutTheNailinIt.
Why: Silence allows domestic violence to thrive. Taking this vow opens critical dialogue about domestic violence and shows support for survivors.
Take the Vow: “I vow to help end domestic violence and the silence surrounding it by painting my fingernail purple.”
